We planned this distribution long time ago. We are aware that Zhemgang is the poorest district in Bhutan and we don't want to miss the opportunity to distribute shoes there. The plan was to take as many charitable goods as possible. So, we decided to take shoes, clothes, toys, books, blankets, foods etc.

Day 1 (13/10/12)- We started our journey towards Buli (Zhemgang) at 5:30am in the morning. It was cold, but as we reached Dochula, the morning sun gave us the confidence that it's not gonna rain. We ate our breakfast at Lobesa (60kms from Thimphu). But soon we learnt that there is a fault in the brake system and we had to fix the brake at Lobesa. The ride towards Trongsa was smooth, we had our lunch at Trongsa and reached Zhemgang at 4pm and by night fall at around 6pm we reached the beautiful place called Buli. We were greeted by the Gup of Nangkhor gewog. He was supportive to us and that night he was kind enough to arrange us a place to sleep and dinner to eat at his home.

Day 2 (14/10/12)- I got up early in the morning. First thing we did was go out and enjoy the sun. I must confess that 'BULI' is one of the most beautiful place after Phobjikha. As gup explains, the land is fertile, climate moderate and lovely people who greet you even if they don't know you.

But the bad news came to us that the potters and horses gonna reach the base camp (Malaya) only in the evening and we can't move without them. So, that day we were treated by the Tshogpa of Buli with a tasty and traditional lunch. Then we geared for the next day. Meanwhile, Gup took me around Buli and showed me almost everything about Buli. There we encountered a girl (Sonam Choden) who is just 23years old living with her mother. As i sat near her and started to talk, the gup told me that her lower body is paralyzed from birth. Sonam is dependent on her mother for all her daily chores, even when it comes to going for a nature call. The toilet is 20 meters away from her house which makes it impossible to use it.

The gup and Help-Shoe Bhutan decided to build a toilet attached to her home, and it will have a western style pot. She says that she has a dream to have a toilet attached to her home. Below is the picture of her home, which is build with the voluntary contribution from the villagers.

Once again, gup promises us that timber and labour will be taken care by the people of village and Help-Shoe Bhutan will help in getting few materials like western style pot, CGI Sheet, Cement bags etc.
In the evening around 4pm, we moved to the base camp (Malaya) which is around 15Kms but takes 2hours on a pick up truck. There we were welcomed by the potters and horse who were ready for a day long trek to Bardo gewog.

Day 3 (15/10/12)- Mission- To reach Bardo gewog anyhow before the night fall. During the previous night, we were warned by the potters that, path that leads to Bardo gewog is in bad shape and the path is very hostile. Keeping this in mind we geared up early in the morning and we moved fromo Malaya at 8am. Along with the Help-Shoe Bhutan team, there were 8 potters and 15 horses to carry the shoes and other stuffs. The path is indeed very hostile for a man who lived all his live in town to trek. But we moved without much worries except for some, in fact too many rest on the way. We had our lunch at Churmulung with the potters. The potters were kind and very hard working.

The scene was lovely as we went pass few villages on the way. In the afternoon we reached Chamkhar chu (RIver). From there on the path was steep and it was very hard for us to climb. It took almost two and half hours to reach Bardo gewog. We reached Bardo gewog at 6pm. There once again the tshogpa of Bardo gewog welcomed us. He took us to his home and arranged us dinner and place to sleep.

Day 4 (16/10/12) Distribution day at Bardo gewog. We were fortunate to be allowed to use the Bardo Primary School for the distribution. Tshogpa informed all the villagers about the distribution and on the distribution day, people from far flung villages came early in the morning outside the distribution center.

We made it a point not to miss a single person leave the room without getting a pair of shoes. The distribution began with Bardo Tshogpa calling the names according to the house hold names. Day 5 (17/10/12) We started our journey towards base camp at 5:30am. It was refreshing to start the trek early. The view was awesome. Although the path was hostile, I must confess that the terrain and the landscape was beyond description.

We reached the place called Churmulung. From there we got lift on a tractor. But since we had to walk another 2 and half hours on foot to reach the base camp (Malaya). It was around four in the afternoon when we reach the base camp. We had to wait for vehicle which can take us to Buli. But unfortunately we had to camp that night at Malaya. And it was cold, without electricity and mobile connectivity.

Day 6 (18/10/12) We started our journey towards Buli on a Bolero Pickup and reached there early. But due to scarcity of vehicle, we were struck at Buli. Luckily in the afternoon we got a lift on a private vehicle and on a DCM truck which took us till Zhemgang town. There once again we had to sit with frustration due to the absence of vehicle. But we met a person who is a customer of ShoeVival and he came forward to drop us till Wangduegang. There we got a Petrol tanker who was going towards Trongsa. It was around 7Pm we got on the tanker. We reached Trongsa at 11:30pm.

Day 7 (19/10/12) Troongsa to Thimphu.
During this distribution trip to Zhemgang we faced many obstacle. Those include financial constraint and lack of transportation means. But at the end of the distributions, we must say that with what ever resources we had at the disposal, we tried our best to perform our job of penetrating the remotest of villages and we are proud to have got so much love and support from people around.
The greatest gift we received was through the smiles we have spread and we promise to continue doing this.

I went to visit opposition leader who was witnessing the match. He then introduced me to Dasho Thinley who is the president of Bhutan Dragon Motorcycle Club. Since then communication between us grew and it reached to a fruitful conclusion where we decided that, Help-Shoe Bhutan will carry shoes, and Bhutan Dragons will be the distributing partner. I don't know much about the history of club. Nor did i hear much about them, but the work they do is somewhat same as we do. They identify beneficiaries before the ride, and support them with necessary stuffs like beddings, rations, stationeries or schools dress if the beneficiaries is a student.
There were few meetings at the club house with the plans. On a foggy morning of 4th January'12, we gathered infront of the club house. Engines started, warming up for the Thimphu-Phuntsholing leg. I was not used to being a pillion, but as we passed few hours of our journey it seemed comfortable and enjoying the nature first hand, feeling the cool breeze. I must confess that the weather was not very pleasant but the fact of the matter is i have to ride till the destination and the opportunity of being a part of charity made me interested more in having the positive thought.
Taking off the helmet, relaxing the tired legs, gasping for fresh air and photo sessions. Oh yes.. more of photo sessions..
The warm weather, people from all walks of lives were at sight due to the moenlam at the banks of Toorsa. We rested for a while before we start the Phuntsholing-Samtse leg. But the weather god wanted us to rest for more.. So, he poured rain.. We were at the hotel lobby, talking, taking pictures, and of course waiting for the rain to stop. All the while i was sipping hot coffee.
Finally, we could start the ride towards Samtse and reach there by 8pm. The support staff were good.. I must confess, they were awesome. The tent was ready, with our host at Samtse made arrangement for tea and snacks. Bonfire lighted, we talked about the experience we had. Sing songs, play guitars, jokes... It went on till mid-night.

I got up the next morning bit early to sort out shoes that we were taking for distribution. We took around 150pairs of shoes to be distributed at Sibsoo and Tendu gewog. Then started the ride towards Sibsoo. On the way we had a pit stop at Changmari. There was this bakery, it is said to be the oldest bakery in Bhutan. The cakes were awesome, freshly baked, and the mouth watering taste.

After all the cakes and coffee, we took on wheels. On reaching Sibsoo, the distribution spot was set up with chairs, beneficiaries waiting for our arrival. The Bhutan Dragons MC started their charity, and that was my first experience with the works BDMC do. It was very emotional to see youths, suffering from polio. I thought that polio is no more in Bhutan. But the truth was something different which is not really found in urban area. I am glad and thankful to BDMC for partnering with them. BDMC distributed basic needs like blankets, mosquito nets, rations, cash to meet the educational expenses like stationery, uniforms etc.. Simultaneously we were distributing shoes to people who came there.
It is said that Tendu is the last gewog in the western Bhutan. Upon reaching Tendu, the gup, beneficiaries were waiting for us and i could see many old people without shoes. Even some of the kids were not having a decent shoes on their feet. Well, these are some motivation that drive us.
We distributed around 100pairs of shoes at Tendu.
Here i felt relieved and satisfied. Then the journey began towards Thimphu. Some of the members went towards Siliguri for stocking up spare parts for their ride, few of us came to Phuntsholing. Following day, both the groups met at Central hotel were we had good dinner. Thanks goes to the proprietor of the hotel. It was a hard ride for me, being new to long journey on heavy machine. But once again the distributions went well and we reached Thimphu next day with pit stops all along the way. Never mind the minor machine breakdowns, it was one of the best ride of my life. Ride with a mission.
The next ride is scheduled on 23rd April. And this time we are going far east. The ride will cover almost all the districts in central and eastern Bhutan. Help-Shoe Bhutan have promised to take along 500pairs of shoes. Also we are doing something new. We have been collecting socks and stockings from the business communities. They are generous. We will distribute shoes and socks as well. we will ride and do charity at Kanglung (with the help of SSU), Trashiyangtse and at Lhuntse. I am excited. And pray for a pleasant weather.
And that's my religion. -Abrahamn Lincoln. The collection drive went well and there was a hype created due to the media coverage. The expectation was high. And to be very frank, i was not very sure if i could deliver. Then again the support staff was very helpful in supporting, they worked very hard, even on sundays. So the first shoe distribution was held at Changbangdu, popularly known as Kalabazar. There was our Thimphu Mayor to witness the distribution.

The distribution team reached there around 3pm. And the children started standing in queue. Even at this moment, i was not very sure how those shoes will be accepted. This kind of shoe distribution was being held first time, those old shoes cleaned and repaired. But i was optimistic about the event. Then people in all ages started pouring in at the parking area. I was nervous, cold but the smile in the face of childern lighted up my spirit. Then came the Thimphu Mayor-Dasho Kinley. We took choclates with us to sweeten the buds while receiving shoes.
Then there was a special guest who wants to be a part of distribution team. And she too came with us. She is a professor of Sociology at Wheaton College.
There were different kinds of shoes- adults, kids, flip flops, boots, leather shoes and the list goes on. Since this was the first shoe distribution, we were lack in experiences. We planned the distribution in such a way that the beneficiaries can see the shoes displayed in the parking area and they can select the shoes.

Help-Shoe Bhutan took 221 pairs of cleaned and repaired shoes.

They were very excited, we could clearly see that the kids and adults as well were choosing their shoes even before their turn came to try out their shoes. Soon kids and adults rushed towards the shoes and the view looked more like a fish market. Having said that, it was indeed a honor for us, the distributing team. The shoes we took were old but recycled one.
It was a satisfying job, it motivated us to do more of these and continue to do it.
The most memorable moment was when a boy of 5years came to me and asked, When we are coming for the next distribution. I didn't care much initially, but latter on i called the boy and asked him why questioned me.. And he said, he didn't got shoes this time. And wanted to know when we were coming next. At that moment, i realized how important a pair of shoes is? I can't really describe that moment. I could neither tell him that we are out of stock, nor could say that we would bring him next time. That was the time i felt i should clean more and more shoes, so that when we go for next distribution, we don't have to face such question.

Well, every distribution taught me something new, something important- About shoes..!!
I must say that we are doing what we do the best, cleaning and repairing shoes. But the main people behind this campaign are those who fund us. And we are proud to say that we were funded by Druk Holdings & Investments and Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation. If it was not them, then we could have never done what we are doing now- collecting old shoes, cleaning & repairing and distributing those shoes to the needy ones. We owe them for what we have got from the society.
We will continue to do this for times to come. Now that we don't to worry about distributing shoes as we have our distributing partner- Bhutan Dragon Motorcycle Club
http://bhutandragons.blogspot.com/

Gratitude to all those who stand by us, when we were not very sure if we could deliver what is anticipated.
Help-Shoe Bhutan organized a old shoe collection drive at clock tower square on 17th September 2011. And the campaign received lots of accolades and media coverage. The intention was clear-
1. Collect as many old shoes.
2. Revive them.
3. and finally distribute them among the people who cannot afford a decent pair of shoe.

But to execute it and pull of successfully it took lots of brain cells and sweats. At the end of the day, there were few extra pair of hand that made this campaign a success.

I conceived this idea when i was on visit to my friend whose recycling company works at Memelakha. Acres of forest were destroyed for generations, just to dump our thrash. It was a sad sight for a man like me who lives in Thimphu. There i saw lots of shoes. And many of those shoes could be recycled and reused.

I realized that there are so many tiny, hardworking feet without a proper shoe to protect it from cold, puncture wounds and from infections. There are so many cases of school going children walking for miles without a decent shoes. Also there are so many farmers who toil the field whole day without a decent pair of shoes.
Here i had to act, act to change one feet at a time, act to stop one shoes going to landfill. I never advocated to change the whole situation.
Then the ground work began, from conceiving the idea to organizing the campaign to implementing it. The first major hurdle to move forward was the funding. So i had to sit down, write the proposal and prepare enough to convince the pro environment agencies and organizations. Druk Holdings & Investments was one of the first organization to put their money in this unique initiative. Although it took some time but it was worth waiting for their approval. Second such organization was Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation. It was for the first time that i had to stand in front of their board to present the initiative. It was scary and i was nervous but again the positive reply is what i expecting.
Organizing such a campaign was not easy, since i conceived this idea, i had in mind the clear picture of doing the thing. But on the ground, it was different. I must say its complicated. For this campaign to succeed we needed lots of resources. So, i approached Thimphu Thromde. I really appreciated their support. They provided us with free store house, free clock tower space for the day of campaign, also the sacks which we used were also provided by Thimphu Thromde. The campaign was organized on Vishwakarma puja day, so it was not easy to arrange pick up trucks. So, here Thimphu Thromde provided us one mahindra pick up, Lhawang Survey Consultancy and my cousin provided us one hilux each. When we needed the most, ReCiTi (private recycling enterprise)provided us one maruti van. So in the end, we had enough vehicles to ferry volunteers and bring back the collected shoes.
There were extra pairs of hand that made this campaign a success.
Sangay Tshering (Mops and Condoms)- He was there from the start, till the end as a media coordinator and he did help me in initial days in designing the program.
Yeshay Jatsho (Fresh Graduate)-He is one hardworking guy. He does it with heart.
There were many who came forward. I appreciate them all and they are gearing up to work with us for the second collection drive which is going to happen around mid-May.Dawa Dakpahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16142415209271404581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2285943476212921532.post-67882851247821339312011-11-26T17:25:00.000+06:002011-11-26T17:35:30.748+06:00ShoeVival-The Shoe Laundry

Bhutan is a small country. Thimphu being the capital city, it has grown in double digits over the year. Thimphu has almost everything, good restaurants, global products, necessary services. Thimphu has a varied population consisting of rich, middle class, fashion conscious youths etc. But Thimphu lacked a shoe laundry. Shoe Laundry with professional pair of hand to clean expensive shoes, mend shoes without damaging beloved shoes of the clients.
One year ago I was jobless, without a degree to search for a appropriate job. So i decided to go ahead to do something of my own and do something creatively.
Hence i realized that there is no shoe laundry to cater the shoe loving population. Again it was in fact difficult to start something new. So i bought the franchise of 'The Shoe Laundry' in Mumbai to train and learn the art of cleaning repairing shoes. They are in this business since 2003. Although i had a solid business idea, plan and a good franchiser. But to be very frank i was not very sure if the population of Thimphu will accept us. Here the marketing strategy was essential due to the uniqueness of the service, ShoeVival caters. Being a rookie in this world of business, it was difficult for me initially. As saying goes, 'Anything the mind can conceive and believed; can be achieved'. Things went well due to the determination and hard work of our team. I must confess that, Thimphu do appreciate something new that fulfills the need of the population.
